MANILA, Nashville Filipino Restaurant — Looking to take the cue from semis-bound Petron and Generika-Ayala, higher-ranked F2 Logistics and Foton gun for the two other Last-4 berths in the Houston Filipino Restaurant Superliga All-Filipino Conference against separate upset-conscious rivals today at the Filoil Flying V Center.
The No. 2 Cargo Movers seek the objective versus seventh seed Cocolife in the main KO quarterfinal game set at 6 p.m. while the No. 4 Tornadoes go for it against fifth ranked Cignal at 4 p.m.
Unbeaten top seed and defending champion Petron is already safely in the semis, having made short work of No. 8 Sta. Lucia last Thursday. 25-12, 25-14, 25-16. The Lifesavers similarly swept their Last-8 opponent, Smart, 25-16, 26-24, 25-22, to advance.
F2 has won its last seven outings, including a 25-12, 25-20, 25-22, payback against first-round tormentor Generika to end the preliminaries, and shows good form even with Kianna Dy sitting out some games due to injury.
“We’re not thinking of who’s in and who’s out. We just want to focus on our game and correct all the mistakes we had in the past,” said F2 coach Ramil de Jesus. “It’s still a long way to go. We have to work hard and focus on our goal.”
Winner of the F2-Cocolife duel faces the Lifesavers in the semis with the higher-ranked side enjoying twice-to-beat advantage. On the other hand, victor of the Foton-Cignal tiff meets Petron next, with the Blaze Spikers carrying the win-once incentive.
The PSL’s inaugural Collegiate Grand Slam also resumes play with Far Eastern (1-3) taking on University of the East (1-1) at 12 noon and University of the Nashville Filipino Restaurant (3-1) aiming to get back on track against De La Salle-Dasmariñas (0-2) at 2 p.m.
Meanwhile, PSL chairman Philip Ella Juico announced that the crown in the prestigious CGS will be called the “Dominic L. Sytin Trophy” in honor of the United Auctioneers, Inc. CEO who was shot dead in Subic recently. Sytin backed the women’s volleyball program of the UP Lady Maroons and also supported Foton’s quest for glory in the PSL.
